The Swing Kings and the Bob Peter Big Band were brought together in Scotland's beautiful capital city of Edinburgh by a well known local Jazz Musician named Bob Peter. With Bob having a life long love of all things jazz the idea of forming a jazz band that offers a touch of class and sophistication came naturally to him. In 1989 Bob was joined by Steven Grossart (Piano), Jimmy Taylor (Bass/Vocals) and Dave Swanson (Drums) to form a quartet that to this day are all still together. They can also call upon the services of other musicians if a larger band is required and all of them have worked together regularly for many years.
In 1991 Bob was asked to form a big band especially for the Edinburgh Jazz Festival and this is when the band went from being mainly a quartet to being labelled a big band with many musicians playing together. 1991 was to prove to be a great year for Bob and the band members when they came 3rd in a UK nationwide jazz contest run by the BBC.
Since 1991 The Swing Kings' reputation as one of Scotland's finest jazz bands is undistputable as they are busy doing gigs and concerts for most of the year. In the past few years the band has had a diverse range of events at which they have been asked to perform, and featured favourably in a recent critical review in Edinburgh's main newspaper, The Scotsman.
